The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Grande Date 5050-12B30-B52A is a modern version of the watch widely regarded as the first modern dive watch. Fifty Fathoms History: The First Modern Dive Watch
In 1953 Blancpain CEO Jean-Jacques Fiechter, an amateur diver, created the Fifty Fathoms after running low on air during a dive. It was the first watch to bring together every feature of a modern diver: a secured rotating bezel, strong water resistance, a self-winding movement, antimagnetic protection and luminous markers on a dark dial. The name comes from its depth rating of 50 fathoms, about 91 metres, and from a line in Shakespeare's The Tempest. The modern Fifty Fathoms collection relaunched in 2007.
Design: Sapphire Bezel and Large Date
The domed unidirectional bezel is made of sapphire, a material surpassed in hardness only by diamond, so it stays almost scratch-free. It recalls the bakelite bezel of the original 1953 model. The black dial keeps the classic Fifty Fathoms codes: large luminous markers, sword hands and a single large 12. At 6 o'clock, two windows show the Grande Date, which changes instantly at midnight. The lightweight titanium case makes a 45mm diver comfortable for daily wear.
Movement: Calibre 6918B
The in-house Calibre 6918B is based on Blancpain's Calibre 1315. Three mainspring barrels give it a five-day (120-hour) power reserve, and its silicon balance spring protects against magnetic fields. It has 262 components and 44 jewels and runs at 4 Hz. Blancpain's secured movement system adds further protection to the calendar mechanism.
